BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

For the week of Jan. 28th, 2004

Any one who is trying to cook low-fat has to be familiar with the great monthly magazine “Cooking Light”. But keeping all those magazines around or clipping the recipes becomes annoying and time consuming. The solution to this dilemma can be found in The Complete Cooking Light Cookbook Edited by Cathy A. Wesler. This huge collection of over 1,000 recipes brings the best of the magazine into your cookbook library. Chapters include appetizers/beverages, breads, desserts, fish/shellfish, grains/pastas, meatless main dishes, meats, poultry, salads/dressings, sandwiches, sauces/condiments, soups/salads and vegetable side dishes and all the recipes are low-fat. Nutritional breakdowns for each recipe are also included.
When I cook low-fat (which in case you haven’t been reading this column is not very often) my favorite cookbook is the American Heart Association Low-Fat Low-Cholestrol Cookbook, Second Edition : Heart-Healthy, Easy-to-Make Recipes That Taste Great. This spiral bound 384 page cookbook is filled with family favorites. If you can only own one low-fat cookbook this is the one. With over 200 recipes I am sure that you will find something to suit your fancy. Check out the other cookbooks from The American Heart Association. The whole series is great.
